ORC: Week 2 | A Blank Slate

Hi friends! It's Week Two of the One Room Challenge! If you're not familiar with this challenge, the lovely Linda of Calling it Home organized a challenge to the blogosphere to makeover an entire space that you've been neglecting in your home...in six weeks. I chose my office, which I have been neglecting for over a year. I'm excited to jump right into this challenge!

Last week, I mentioned that we were having carpet installed in our entire upstairs (more on that later!), and it was finally finished yesterday. Since the room is now empty, I can really start with a blank slate! I'm already debating on furniture placement...an empty room will do that to you. But since there was no furniture, I was able to take some pictures of what the space looks like now, a true "before", if you will.

I installed the shelves on a whim a few months ago (they're an Ikea hack!), and I still have to style them. For now, they hold all of the crap that was sitting on top of my desk before I moved it.

The chalkboard wall got pretty scuffed up during the move and carpet installation, so it needs to be cleaned and touched up.

My dad actually picked up this chair from a thrift store for me- isn't it amazing? I was thinking about painting it, but I think it's going to stay as-is.

The bamboo is a little scuffed up, though...anyone have any tips on how to restore it without painting?

I moved my desk back in to the room to see what the chair looks like with it. I love that the chair has casters on it, and that the arms are the perfect height to fit under the desk!

And since I have such a blank slate and most of the large pieces of furniture are just waiting to be moved in, I was able to take a step back and create a new mood board for the space. This is what I'm thinking as of now:

One Room Challenge Board

I already have the main pieces of furniture and a similar pink bench. I'm thinking of changing up my pink and white bookshelf by backing it with marbled paper. If I leave the chair as-is, I'm thinking about reupholstering the seat in a luscious green velvet...wouldn't that be amazing?

Next up, I have to DIY some curtains and start moving pieces back in!

Make sure to check back next week to see my progress!

  3. Ooooo! Going to be great! I don't know if it works on bamboo, but you can try mixing olive oil and vinegar ( equal parts) and wiping down the wood. It'll help with the scuffs and bring back some shine- I'd do a test spot! I think you can find a tutorial on Miss Mustard Seed.

  14. That chair is a beautiful find and its in such great shape. You might try rubbing a bit of 'Restore A Finish' on it. you can usually find it at lowes/home depot. I've even seen it at HomeGoods some times.

I love your comments like I love a glass of red wine, a slow Van Morrison song, and freshly swiffered floors...which is, like, a lot.
